Trainings for Licensed Mental Health Professionals (with CEUs)

Our mental health system has been improving, however, large gaps in services still exist. As providers of mental health services, we need to understand that cultural differences influence every individual, both provider and client. The CT mental health licensing boards now require all clinicians to get the proper training for culturally sensitive services to provide effective mental health treatment and to possibly prevent episodes of acute mental illness. 

I. Cultural Competence training (3 CEUs)

This 3 hour comprehensive Cultural Competence training covers the following topics:

  • Definition of culture and its role in mental health treatment
  • Definition of Cultural Competence
  • Dimensions of Cultural Competence
  • Cultural competence continuum
  • Diversity in the United States
  • Disparities in mental health services
  • Cultural barriers and biases in mental health services

In addition, we have included experiential training components that include:

  • Self reflective activities for clinicians to understand their own cultural identity
  • Self assessment for clinicians to reflect on their position on the Cultural Competence continuum
  • Case studies

Last but not the least, the DMS V now includes a Cultural formulation interview, recommended for use by mental health clinicians engaged in assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning of clients. In the training we include:

  • Introduction and discussion of the DSM V Cultural formulation interview
  • Practice using the DSM V Cultural formulation interview

II. Cultural Competence : Multicultural view at Parenting (2 CEUs)

This 2 hour comprehensive training covers the following topics:

  • Explore the role of culture in parenting
  • Establish framework for parenting from a multi- cultural perspective
  • Understand challenges with regards to issues of abuse, neglect and mandated reporting
  • Promote culturally competent skills for addressing parenting issues
  • Identify culturally appropriate resources for parents and families

In addition, we have included experiential training components that include:

  • Activities for awareness of personal biases on parenting
  • Opportunity to explore challenges of cross cultural encounters regarding parenting

Last but not the least, the DMS V now includes a Cultural formulation interview, recommended for use by mental health clinicians engaged in assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning of clients. In the training we include:

  • Use of DSM V cultural formulation interview in working with clients from diverse culture

III. Cultural Competence Training for Nurses, Case Managers and other Client Facing Staff

This 2 hour training provides a framework for all health professionals to respond to a diverse client base with increased awareness of personal biases, cultural knowledge and cultural skills.

  • Establish framework for Culture and Cultural Competence
  • Create an understanding of the Cultural challenges faced in works setting
  • Develop experiential opportunities for awareness of personal biases and challenges during cross cultural encounters
  • Promote an understanding of culturally competent skills for cross-cultural communication
  • Provide practical learning experiences for skill development in cultural competency

This is an experiential training that prepares participants to develop cultural competency skills pertinent to providing sensitive and effective care for a diverse clientele.

IV. Diversity and Leadership Training for Supervisors and Managers

This 3 hour training provides supervisors and  managers an opportunity to reflect on their own work styles and biases. It provides experiential activities to

  • Creating a diverse and inclusive work environment
  • Explore ways of setting goals and expectations
  • Empowering employees
  • Delegating and assigning responsibilities
  • Improving collaboration and resolving conflicts
  • Providing feedback to employees from diverse backgrounds.  

V. Training on CLAS Standards (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Standards)

This training covers the 14 CLAS standards created by the Office of Minority Health. The training uses didactic information as well as experiential components to help agencies implement and comply to the CLAS standards. Objectives include:

  • Exploring cultural styles
  • Communicating with diverse consumer / patient groups
  • Types of common cultural and linguistic misjudgments
  • Health literacy strategies
  • Cultural responsive skills
  • Looking at cultural identity
  • Identity categories – social group membership / dimensions of diversity
  • Cultural collisions and how to avoid them
  • Ethnocentrism , cultural bias and stereotypes
  • Discuss National standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS standards)
  • Personal cultural humility action planning

VI. Cultural Competence Training for School Staff

This 2 hour comprehensive training covers the following topics:

  • Viewing diversity in the United States
  • Addressing culture & its role in education
  • Understanding cultural barriers and biases in seeking education
  • Cultural Competence & it’s dimensions
  • Discussing cultural challenges faced by school professionals
  • Awareness of personal biases and growth areas
  • Implementation of cultural knowledge and skills

We included didactic information as well as experiential components that include:

  • Self reflective activities to understand own cultural identity
  • Activities to become aware of own biases, limitations and challenges
  • Self assessment for position on the Cultural Competence continuum
  •  Real case studies

Licensure Requirements

Cultural Competence Training is required for LMFT, LCSW, LMSW and LPC licensure renewals in Connecticut.
